Lift Up Your Hearts in Gumber!

Gumber Farm was a place of delight for Sussex writer, Hilaire Belloc. As a child, growing up in Slindon, he loved to walk to this quiet and secluded spot, and he frequently returned to find solitude here as an adult. He wrote a poem in celebration of Gumber and the importance he attached to returning here, especially after long periods out of the country. His restless spirit found sanctuary here.

In this video, Chris reads ‘Lift Up Your Hearts in Gumber’ at Gumber Farm to a group of children from Bury School, who had, like Belloc, walked across the downs to get there – the best way to appreciate any arrival!
